![]() Above is my first ever attempt at sewing. Katherine wanted to dress up as a fairy when we went to the Renaissance Festival this year, and rather than spending big bucks on wings I foolishly decided I could make them myself.
![]() I took 16 gauge steel wire and bent it into shape and then sewed (yes, I sewed) the fabric she chose around it. I won't tell you how many needles I broke sewing around that wire. I DID make more than one trip to WalMart though...
![]() Here's a close up of the stitches. Not exactly consistent, but good enough for the wings to hold together.
![]() This is the picture of the wings she found that she wanted her wings to look like. You can see below that It wasn't EXACTLY the same, but I didn't miss it by much and she really liked them: ![]() You can't tell it from this picture, but Katherine's wings contained "fireflies" that blinked on and off pseudo-randomly. She was quite proud of the fact that here fairy wings were the only ones there that did it. And I was quite proud of the circuit board I soldered together to make it work ;-) ![]() Though it isn't the best picture of Katherine, you can at least see some of the fireflies lit up in this one. ![]() And of course Aidan didn't want to be left out. He wanted to dress up as a knight. 9 sheets of fun foam later, and he was. Of course, he didn't wear the costume more than 20 minutes after we got there, but at least I can say I tried. I don't think it turned out nearly as well as the storm trooper costume I made for him for halloween (I think I still have a picture of it here).
